Setting Up a Custom Assistant

How to set up a custom assistant

Custom Assistants

You can create your own assistant with a unique identity, personality, and communication style. Custom assistants allow you to tailor how OpenAssistant represents you, your team, or your organization. When creating a custom assistant, you can customize:

  • Assistant name

  • Assistant email

  • Avatar

  • Personality

  • Communication style

  • Signature

  • Backstory and context

Assistant Identity

Every assistant needs an email address that can send and receive messages. There are two ways to do that with a custom assistant.

Option 1: OpenAssistant-Hosted Email Address

You can use a OpenAssistant-managed email address. When creating the assistant, Skej automatically provisions a new @openassistant.us email address. You simply choose:

  • Assistant name

  • Personality

  • Avatar

  • Signature

No additional email setup is required. This is the fastest way to get started.

Option 2: Connect Your Own Company Email

You can also connect a custom assistant to an email inbox within your organization's domain.

Examples:

This allows your assistant to communicate using your organization's branding and email domain.

Requirements

The email account must:

  • Be a real mailbox

  • Be accessible by the user creating the assistant

  • Be separate from any inbox currently used by another custom assistant

If you are migrating from a previous version of Skej, the mailbox cannot already be connected to another active assistant.

Setup Process

The setup process for a custom assistant inbox is straightforward:

  1. Create or identify the mailbox you want the assistant to use.

  2. Connect the mailbox during assistant creation.

  3. Complete the authorization process.

  4. Verify connectivity.

Once connected, the assistant will send and receive messages through that inbox.

Customizing Personality

Custom assistants support significantly more personality customization than previous versions of Skej. You can define:

External Communication Style

How the assistant communicates with customers, prospects, vendors, and other external contacts.

Internal Communication Style

How the assistant communicates with you and your team.

Personality Details

Describe how the assistant should behave.

Backstory & Context

Provide background information that helps shape the assistant's behavior.

The more context you provide, the more consistently the assistant will represent your desired style.

Assistant Avatars

Each assistant can have a custom avatar. You can:

  • Upload your own image

  • Generate an avatar

  • Use a default avatar

Avatars help visually distinguish assistants throughout the platform.

Assistant Signatures

Each assistant can have its own email signature. Examples include:

  • Company branding

  • Contact information

  • Scheduling links

  • Job titles

  • Legal disclaimers

Signatures are automatically applied to messages sent by that assistant.
